BEER RUN OF THE WEEK: WILL ANY OF THESE BEERS HAVE A CONNECTION WITH OUR “I LOVE MICHELADAS” MIXES AS DEEP AND STRONG AS AN ANGRY LATINA MOTHER AND HER FLYING CHANCLA??
Just in case you haven’t noticed, the weather is changing! The summer vibes seem like they are now behind us. It’s starting to feel like autumn and we are ready for it. So it might be a good time to start bringing out the warm hoodies, the hot chocolate (you can order some delicious Oaxacan hot chocolate from the Guelaguetza restaurant’s online shop) and the much needed San Marcos cobijas. Don’t event act like you don’t have a blanket with a random animal on it! (It’s all about the blanket with the huge lion on it, familia!) If you have no idea what blankets we are referring to it, just ask anybody that speaks Spanish and they will fill you in. These cobijas will save your life if you ever find yourself stuck in a snow blizzard. (You might get heat stroke while using it, but at least you won’t get frostbite.)
This is a great opportunity to let you know that this blog has nothing to do with mothers and their discipline strategies. We don’t condone the use of flying chanclas, even though some kids look like they need it. (We have all witnessed those temper tantrums at the store when little Juanito doesn’t get the Lego set that he wants. It’s not pretty.) There’s nothing a little chancla love can’t fix. Again, we don’t believe in violence. #LetsCancelTheFlyingChancla
Our apologies if our title mislead you and you’re still trying to figure out what’s going on. Let me “copy and paste” a very important paragraph from our very first BEER RUN exercise several months ago before we get into our BEER RUN OF THE WEEK details. It will put things into perspective and we will all be on the same page.
THE “COPIED AND PASTED” VERY IMPORTANT PARAGRAPH:
We know that “time is money” and that you value your free time. With that idea in mind, we are starting this biweekly exercise, in which we select 3 random beers and we’ll let you know if they are perfect (or not) for micheladas! We want to save you time, money and effort by just letting you know what you should try and perhaps what beer you should avoid. We are not beer sommeliers nor are we experts of any kind… we just enjoy drinking micheladas especially if it’s for very important research purposes. We will do our best to keep it real and just provide honest feedback from our very own tasting experience.
For the 5th time, we sent out the same clueless individual who has been randomly picking the beers for this exercise. He was sent to go explore the many aisles of alcoholic beverages at Ramirez Beverage Center on Olympic Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Since we are in the last weeks of Hispanic Heritage Month, he selected 3 random Mexican-style lagers as a little homage to nuestro México lindo y querido.
As tradition, giving out symbolic medals is the best way to rank these beers. Based on how well the three beers tasted with our “I Love Micheladas” mixes, they were either given a gold, silver or bronze medal. Of course, a gold medal is the best, a silver medal is considered second place and a bronze medal would be third and last place. Just to be clear, receiving a bronze medal is not a shameful thing….. it just means that two other beers had a stronger connection with our michelada mixes. The fact that any of these beers were selected for our silly exercise should be celebrated!
Now that we are all caught up with the details from our beer run, these are the beers for this week and their respective medals:
GOLD MEDAL WINNER
COLIMITA
(4.2% ABV)
Where has this amazing Mexican crystal clear yellow lager been all my life!?? For starters the clean and sophisticated presentation of the can is attractive and appreciated. As expected from its enchanting modern exterior, it had a crisp and smooth taste. This lager that is brewed and bottled in Colima, México was extremely refreshing when paired with our Red mix and our OG Brown mix! Even though it worked perfectly with both, the best pair was with the Red mix. The Red mix gave its mild bitter flavor a chance to shine through beautifully. We want to congratulate Colimita and the entire Mexican state of Colima on its much deserved GOLD MEDAL win!
SILVER MEDAL WINNER
EL SULLY
(4.8% ABV)
The can of this beer is very cool. It has vibrant colors and it even has interesting reading material! This Mexican-style lager is perfect for those michelada drinkers who enjoy a mild bitter taste in their drink. It was tried with our Red mix and our OG Brown mix, and the bitter taste was stronger with our Red mix. The spicy nature of the OG Brown mix helped balance the bitterness, so we enjoyed it best in this way. We will definitely continue purchasing this beer for our miche sessions. For that reason, this is an American brewed beer that should be proud of its SILVER MEDAL!
BRONZE MEDAL WINNER
BAD HOMBRE
(4.8% ABV)
The can of this beer is intriguing as well since it has a very cool calavera on it! This Mexican-style lager is perfect for those who want a michelada that showcases a strong flavor that’s a lot more on the bitter side. This beer was satisfying and paired best with our OG Brown mix. Again, the spicy nature of this mix allowed the beer flavor to be balanced and quite enjoyable. The Red mix provided a space for the beer to be more bitter. Like we always mention, it all comes down to what one prefers when enjoying a michelada. You can’t go wrong with either choice. We are proud to present this beer with a much deserved BRONZE MEDAL!!!
(PLEASE INSERT VERY LOUD CLAPPING, THE BANGING OF POTS AND PANS & WHISTLING HERE…. WHILE SISTER SLEDGE’S “WE ARE FAMILY” PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND FOR ALL THE MEDAL RECIPIENTS.)
To summarize, all the choices in this week’s beer run proved to be perfect partners for our “I Love Micheladas” mixes. All three left us wanting to go for another miche. Go out and support these beer companies because they are representing our culture to the masses with their amazing products. Check them all out!
Don’t forget that instead of just reading about it, you can also try these pairings out for yourself. Go buy these beers and our mixes so that you can become a critic as well.
